Welcome to Upskill
Helping people understand the science and psychology behind meaningful change.
Growth Begins with Understanding
Evidence-informed resources to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and support meaningful change.
At Inner Mind Navigator, I believe you are the captain of your own journey. My role is not to steer your life for you, but to help you navigate life's challenges with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.
Understanding is often the beginning of meaningful change. The more we understand how our thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and nervous system interact, the better equipped we become to respond with intention, build resilience, and create lasting change.
Upskill is a growing library of evidence-informed articles, research, educational videos, practical exercises, and therapeutic resources designed to encourage curiosity and deepen understanding of mental wellbeing. One of its aims is to demystify clinical hypnotherapy by exploring the science, psychology, and evidence that support its use within modern therapeutic practice. Alongside this, you'll find information on a range of approaches that inform my work as an integrative therapist, including Strategic Psychotherapy & Clinical Hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (Hypno-CBT), psychology, neuroscience, behavioural science, and other topics that support psychological wellbeing.
Whether you're considering therapy, currently attending sessions, or simply looking to learn more, I hope these resources help you make informed decisions, discover new perspectives, and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the therapeutic process.
Meaningful change rarely happens all at once. It develops through understanding, reflection, practice, and the small choices we make each day. Wherever you are on your journey, I hope this library offers knowledge, insight, and encouragement to help you move forward with greater confidence and purpose.
You are the captain of your own life's journey.
Every choice you make shapes the course ahead.
When you choose to navigate with intention, you reclaim your direction, your resilience, and your capacity for meaningful change.
The compass has always been within you. Sometimes, life's challenges make it difficult to see the path clearly. With greater understanding, reflection, and the right guidance, even uncertain waters can become navigable.
Chart your course towards clarity, confidence, and purpose.
One thoughtful step at a time, every challenge becomes an opportunity to learn, every decision a chance to move forward, and every new horizon a reminder that lasting change begins by choosing the right direction.
Understanding Clinical Hypnotherapy
Clinical hypnotherapy is an evidence-informed therapeutic approach that has been extensively researched across a range of psychological and medical applications. Despite this, it remains one of the most misunderstood areas of therapy, with many people's perceptions shaped more by films, television, or stage performances than by modern clinical practice.
The questions below address some of the most common misconceptions about hypnosis, including what it feels like, whether everyone can be hypnotised, and how hypnosis is used safely and ethically within therapy. They also explain how clinical hypnosis is integrated with psychotherapy to support meaningful psychological and behavioural change.
If you'd like to explore these topics in greater depth, you'll also find a collection of articles, research, videos, and evidence-informed resources throughout this page. My aim is not simply to answer questions, but to help you better understand the science, psychology, and therapeutic principles behind clinical hypnotherapy so you can make informed decisions with confidence.
-
Strategic Psychotherapy & Clinical Hypnosis is an evidence-informed therapeutic approach that combines strategic psychotherapy with clinical hypnosis to help people create meaningful and lasting change. Rather than focusing solely on why a problem developed, it seeks to understand the patterns that maintain it and develops practical strategies to change those patterns. Clinical hypnosis is used collaboratively to enhance focused attention, strengthen learning, and support emotional and behavioural flexibility.
-
Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (Hypno-CBT) integrates principles of cognitive behavioural therapy with clinical hypnosis. It focuses on understanding how thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and physiological responses influence one another while using hypnosis to reinforce therapeutic learning, cognitive restructuring, emotional regulation, and behavioural change. Hypno-CBT combines established psychological principles with clinical hypnosis to support practical, evidence-informed interventions tailored to an individual's goals.
-
Most people can experience hypnosis to some degree when they are willing to participate and able to focus their attention. People naturally vary in their responsiveness, but greater hypnotic depth does not necessarily lead to better therapeutic outcomes. Success depends more on collaboration, motivation, and tailoring the approach to the individual than on how "deep" hypnosis feels.
-
No. Clinical hypnosis is a collaborative process, not a form of mind control. Throughout hypnosis, you remain aware of your surroundings and retain the ability to reject suggestions that do not align with your values, beliefs, or goals. Effective hypnotherapy works with your own intentions—not against them.
-
During hypnosis, your attention becomes more focused while distractions fade into the background. This allows you to engage more fully with therapeutic ideas, imagery, and experiences that support your goals. Rather than losing awareness, many people describe feeling more mentally absorbed and able to engage with change in a purposeful way.
-
There is no single way hypnosis feels. Many people describe it as similar to becoming deeply absorbed in a book, a film, meditation, or daydreaming. You remain aware and able to hear the therapist throughout the session, although your attention often feels calmer, more focused, and less distracted by everyday thoughts.
-
When provided by a suitably trained healthcare or mental health professional, clinical hypnosis is considered a safe therapeutic approach for most people. Your therapist will first determine whether hypnosis is appropriate for your individual circumstances and integrate it within an evidence-informed treatment plan. Like any therapeutic intervention, it should always be used ethically and with appropriate clinical training.
Knowledge empowers choice, and informed choices are the foundation of meaningful change.
Understanding Different Therapeutic Approaches
There is no single therapeutic approach that is suitable for everyone or every difficulty. Modern psychological practice often draws upon different evidence-informed models to better understand how thoughts, emotions, behaviours, physiology, and life experiences interact. Throughout this learning library you'll find information about several approaches that inform my clinical work—including Strategic Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (Hypno-CBT), neuroscience, psychology, NLP, and other evidence-informed concepts. The aim is not to suggest one approach is superior to another, but to encourage understanding of how different therapeutic models can complement one another in supporting meaningful change.
